Chapter One: Book Club
We had our annual "sisters Christmas" get together and Lindsey came up with a GREAT idea. This of course led to another great idea--well, let me explain. I am one of 5 girls in our family--we also have one brother who has a delightful wife who is sister number 6. We love getting together just us girls to laugh and share and usually eat also. Well, Lindsey brought out the wrapped books and challenged us all to take one. We will all have one month to read our book and then pass it on to the next sister. I'm not sure if I got lucky, but everyone seemed like they wanted the book I chose. Deb will get mine next. I have started reading it and I think it will be a good one. Chapter Two of The Sisters Project will be Serving Others where we all choose a service project. I'm not sure what I am going to choose but I have a few in mind. I hope each of the other sisters will be able to add posts to this site also. If you are reading, please feel free to comment too. This will be a great adventure for all of us--I even have a few surprises in store (I'm sure the sisters do to).

I'm excited about chapter one book club. I have to finish reading Sarah Palin and then I'll start my book club book. I hope all my sisters enjoy this project and have fun with it. It is amazing how many connections we can make with characters in books. Have fun everyone, Lindsey
ReplyDeleteI am also excited about the book club! My book is The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf. I started the book today and can hardly put it down! Great idea Lin.
ReplyDeleteJerilyn
Oh by the way - I like the picture. I think dad will love it!
ReplyDeleteHey, great idea! If you run out of ideas I just finished "The Guernsey Potato Peel Pie and Literary Society" - very good!
ReplyDeleteI don't believe it Ter. that is one of the books I picked out for our group. Deb is reading it so it will be a couple of months before it will be my turn -- unless everyone speed reads, then we could pass them on even faster!! Come on everyone, read, read, read!! Lindsey
ReplyDeleteActually my book is called "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" authors are Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. This is the first book I have read that is written in letter form. It is a little harder to get in to, but I'm getting in the grove more now.
ReplyDeleteIt's 10:30 on Saturday evening and I just finished my book! I told you I could hardly put it down! OH MY! The rest of you will see -- you won't be able to either.

ReplyDeleteaughhhh.... trying to type with an 11 month old is difficult! stuff gets deleted. my book is difficult, but i'm tyring. lots of naughty words, so no read alouds right now.
ReplyDeleteI am over half way on the book, and I still don't have the recipe for potato peel pie!!!! The book has really gotton good. I did alot of reading yesterday.
ReplyDeleteNice language---"really gotton" not phrasing I should use with a group of teachers. HA
ReplyDeleteOkay, I finally got to the computer to check out this blog thing! Laurel--I am impressed! The technology things kind of scare me, but I guess I best get used to it! I am reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns". It is pretty interesting and Lindsey assures me it won't be long and I won't be able to put it down. I can see by Jerilyn's posts that she must have the most free time! Done already?? Can't wait for that book! Keep reading sisters!
ReplyDeleteThe most free time? Yeah, right! I was telling someone about our blog and they said, "Oh so then do you talk about the book?" And I wasn't sure how to answer that. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteI think we should just leave interesting tidbits or hints about our book to draw the others in. I like this one---"The poor old thing's crazy as a bedbug, of course, but harmless." That will be what they say about me someday I think.
ReplyDeleteI'm determined to get that book finished! If it weren't for having to go back to school today, I would be done! I am having a hard time setting the book down. I think we should wait to discuss them until we are all done--why ruin the surprise of the books. Maybe we will need to have an overnight somewhere to discuss them. Deb, do you still have that time share? We could all chip in for a night away! What do you all think?
ReplyDeleteI could use a night away!!! After a trip to the ER, I was up most of last night and I wasn't reading! My book has gotten better, it's a collection of stories and I'm getting into the second one a little easier. The stories are all about children (in Africa) and how resilient they are in some pretty severe situations. As I write, my resilient child is singing, "Amazing Grace, a sweet you are.... who's Grace?" Staying home today...hopefully get some more reading done!
ReplyDeleteI finished my book last night, and started a new one. "The Well and the Mine" Gin Phillips. Also suggested by Lindsey.
ReplyDeleteWell, another snow day. I didn't read my book yesterday until last night because I was busy doing other things -- baking cookies, cleaning, all the fun stuff we do on snow days!! Anyway, I don't have much left and with another snow day today I'm planning on finishing it this morning. I'll pass it on to Gail then so Gail you better get going on yours so you can read this one. It is very good. I think I get Jerilyn's next -- maybe I'll have to make a road trip (probably by snowmobile) to Sanborn to get her book. Deb, I hope you enjoy The Well and the Mine. It is pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try to add a pic.
ReplyDeleteI just finished my book, Plain Truth. It was wonderful. I learned a lot about the Amish and their way of thinking. We could learn a lot from them. I know you will all enjoy it. Also, Jodi Picoult once again gives me a surprise at the end of the book -- something I wasn't expecting.
ReplyDeleteI finished the third story in my book, it's a collection of four. THey are all stories about children in Africa and how they are affected by religious differences. The last one is about a Muslim teenager who is leaving his country. Still difficult reading, but I'm pushing through it!
ReplyDeleteHey girls, Did you see the article in the Review about all the book clubs in NW Iowa? I noticed the Sheldon Library Book Club is reading the Guernsey Potato Peel Pie and Literary Society!! We're really right up town with the big dogs, I guess!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad everyone is enjoying their books because I had a little budget leak at Borders Friday night and I now have the next 6 books. So get "bookin" sisters because the next 6 are going to be even better (I think!!).
ReplyDeleteFor some reason it appears I posted that last message on Jan. 10, but I posted it one minute ago on Jan. 17. Remember, I'm a tech boob!!
ReplyDeleteI am getting so close to the end and Lindsey was right, I can hardly put it down. Rob said we need to get the book work done, but I said not till I get done with this book! It is heartwrenching to think how women in Afghanistan could be treated but how strong they are. I am so anxious to find out how this will all end. The book takes many twists and turns. If Lindsey tells you its a good book, she is probably right! I hope to finish before the weekend!
ReplyDeleteLindsey,
ReplyDeleteThe time you post is at the bottom of your post. The time above your name is the person before you! And you're not a tech boob!
Well, it looks as if we are all making progress. Gail, finish that book and bring it to me!! I'm anxiously waiting--although I did finish one I was reading from the church library. I am also working on 3 Cups of Tea and really enjoying it. I need to get my manuscript off to myself today (for my Poor Man's Copyright) and then to Julia Cook who will submit it for me to her publisher (what a gal!--I love her and her books for kids!). Keep reading and blogging girls. Also, remember what I said about the service projects--anyone think of one yet, hopefully not scooping snow for people! Later all--Laurel
ReplyDeleteWith the backs that all of us have I'm sure scooping snow will NOT be on the list of service projects. I have an idea in mind I'm still trying to work out the ligistics of it all. I'll share the idea when we get together again. Lindsey told me this morning she has 6 more books for us! I think we better make a list and they can be bonus books if we finish early we can get another one and keep going! I'm anxiously awaiting my next book! Jerilyn
ReplyDeleteOK, I think the bonus book idea is a great one because there is NO WAY I will be able to wait another 5 months to read them. Let me know if you are finished with your book and need a bonus book. I'm reading Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult (I LOVE HER WRITING!!) and it is excellent. Almost done and the bad weather will help me finish. Hopefully I won't get recruited to give shots to the sheep and lambs!!
ReplyDeleteAll right, where do I sign up to be one of your sisters? Another snow day and I decided to be a part of this blog. I am reading "fluff" right now (as Lindsey knows!) and then I have a book to read for school regarding CGI math. After the Borders budget leak last Friday night it might be a while before I tackle my new books. Can I recommend all of you getting a Kindle? Ha! Deb Mortensen
ReplyDeleteWe would be happy to adopt you into the sisterhood!! I think if I got a Kindle I would have to take early early retirement so I could get everything read. I'm thinking the way this winter is going, it is a good thing we had the budget leak at Borders!! I'm starting one of them when I get done with this post, I'm just not sure which one.
ReplyDeleteDeb M.--we would love to have you in the sisterhood. You might have to join in the fun we all come up with, but no doubt it will be a blast!
ReplyDeleteI just want all of you to know the following six books are available for check out when you are waiting your next monthly book and have nothing to read:
ReplyDeleteThe Necklace -- just finished it and now Jerilyn has it. Very good.
Perfect Match -- Jodi Picoult
The Pact -- Jodi Picoult
Promise Not To Tell -- Jennifer McMahon
Same Kind of Different As Me -- Ron Hall and Denver Moore (true story)
By the time You Read This -- Lola Jaye (I'm starting this one today as it looks like a snow day coming tomorrow -- again!! We'll see if my prediction is right!)
If you want to know what the books are about I'm sure you can call me or look them up on the internet.
I have read Some Kind of Defferent As Me....It is REALLY good. Actually one of the best books ever. I could not stop, and it has alot of life lessons also. Joel and I highly recommend it!!
ReplyDeleteI just finished The Secret Life of Bees. YAY--good book. Thanks Lindsey
Sisters,
ReplyDeleteGo to the blog archive on the right and also check under "Service Projects" to make entries under there (of course, service project related). I will also start another "blog chapter"...so check it out.
Well I have started reading the next book. Mine is the one that Heidi had first -- Say You Are One of Them. I agree with what Heidi said -- hard reading, hard to get into. Definitely out of my box. Staying with this will be a challenge. How are the rest of you doing?
ReplyDeleteJust got started reading my Feb book this past week. It has been a busy hectic week so I haven't gotten too far but it is definitely full of suspense already!! I already figured out one of the characters is a real jerk!! He makes my blood boil. I finished reading The Necklace which is available for checkout if anyone wants it. I think it is out right now -- jeesh!! I better get some library cards so I can keep track of things -- HA HA!! I need to finish my Feb book because I was in the middle of another one and had to put that to the side. I'm not going to say I could use a snow day but.... it would help!!
ReplyDeleteNot into my new book yet... the potato peel pie book. I am getting a little more sleep, so maybe I can stay up a little later to read! How about a sisters' overnight the weekend after mom's birthday.... march 6th? we could even go to the sheldon holiday inn!!
ReplyDeleteWow, just finished my book, The Weight of Silence, and Jerilyn was right -- very hard to put down. It is suspenseful to say the least. Now I will finish one of the inbetween books.
ReplyDeleteI finished Barefoot last week. It was a fun book. Now I think I will do a little Bible reading with my extra time. Entertainment is ok, but I do need self help books also. I like variety I guess. Just finished a bible study also, so I have time to investigate new options.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Deb received A Thousand Splendid Suns through Lindsey today. I finished it I think it was Tuesday night. Unbelievable what the Afghanistan women go through--are we thankful for our culture we were born into? I am after reading that! I need something to read...oh, yeah, I got a book on getting organized. One thing to work on each week--takes a whole year. I'm thinking that sounds good. Gail, how is the reading going and what am I getting from you? Laurel
ReplyDeleteRemember, I do have some in betweeners for those of you who are finished. I finished Same Kind of Different As Me -- excellent. I feel it is a must read for everyone. True story. I think Deb has already read that one. I am now reading Afluenza and I'm thinking it is also a must read. I would probably put that in the self help category, so if you want to read it when I'm done Deb, just let me know. I also read the book of Esther (about 3 AM the other morning when I couldn't sleep!!). I don't think I had read it since OT Faith as NWC. Much better reading when it isn't required reading for a class.
ReplyDeleteGail will get busy now since she is done with their tax appointment -- no excuses anymore Gail.
I am loving Heidi's idea of the sisters overnight. I realize that March 6 is this weekend. I don't know if I can make that work but if it works for all of you I could. I believe I brought the idea up for that weekend after mine and Dave's weekend at bed and breakfast. If we don't make it this weekend we need to make it a priority.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I have to start my list of what I have read because I can't keep track anymore. I just wish I could turn those reading minutes in for exercise (exercising the brain?)--probably not going to count because the pants are getting any looser. Anyway, I finished my March book on Wednesday morning before school. Couldn't put the darn thing down. What a read!!! I picked up a few others just because if I don't have a book in my hands, not sure what to do. I read a great book I would recommend to EVERYONE...it's called The Wednesday Letters, can't remember the author. I gave it to someone at work, hope to get it back this next week because I want to share it some more. You will all love the Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult--oh my--what a book. Just block a few days when you get that one. What am I getting next? Gail will have to let me know. Something wrong with my color on my computer screen. Everyone's pictures make us look a bit jaundiced mixed with green--ick!!! Hope I can figure this out. I agree--we need the weekend away. Deb, can you get us a deal on Village West--do you still have your time share? Any other ideas? Laurel
ReplyDeleteOK, the order of my new glasses got messed up somehow, I'm trying the multifocal contact lenses, and my eyes seem to be pooped by the end of the day so I haven't been reading much. Hopefully that will all change soon. I certainly could look into books on tape!!
ReplyDeleteHas anyone else been working on their March book yet? I knew Laurel would love Plain Truth. You all will. It hooks you and you can't let go. Love that Jodi Picoult. I think I'll try to meet her someday. I have tons of questions for her.
Okay, it looks like I am the only one who hasn't posted on here for a while. I am just starting my March book. Seems like I always find something to take me away from books. Usually cleaning or laundry! YUCK! I just read about the weekend away! Looks like we missed that. Hope we can still find a time, it would be great fun. Even if its just an overnight! I'm not sure how the rest of you manage to read more than one book a month. I'll have to try harder! Gail
ReplyDeleteYes, A Thousand Splended Suns was also a great book. Waiting for my next book.......Maybe Plain Truth......I will see what is delivered from my messenger.
ReplyDeleteI just got the Guernsy Potato book from Jer today and had a chance to start it. So far seems interesting. Juliet has a good sense of humor from what I see so far. I'm waiting for Jerry and Kendall right now so I think I'll do a little more reading. I hope everyone is underway on their new books. I have to say I did get into Call Me One of Them. It is very different and the speech is hard to figure out sometimes. It really makes us look outside of our comfort zone at what goes on elsewhere in this world. The young man on the bus really showed a devotion to his religion by not wanting to look at the TV and keeping his arm in his pocket. WOW -- can you imagine!! I hope Gail enjoys it. It isn't fluff -- that's for sure!!
ReplyDeleteHey, where is everyone? Busy reading? Sure hope so, but I think we are all busy enjoying the great weather and other things. I was surprised to see i was the last person to blog. I want to hear where everyone is in their books so please, blog!!
ReplyDeleteI'll be honest, I think I started off on the wrong foot (or the wrong book). I started with the "no fluff" book. Lately, I've been reading a lot of animal sounds books, Junie B. Jones, and The Littles. Someday.... although from what I've heard from the rest of you, when "someday" comes, I'll wish I was back here!!
ReplyDeleteYou're right Heidi--when some day comes...I'm enoyiing an in between book right now because I can't stand not having one to read. I'm reading "The Pact" by Jodi Picoult--thanks to Lindsey for getting me started on that author. Could be a late night of reading tonight if I can keep my eyes open. Gotta mow right now--later. Oh, are we making our April book our April-May book? I'm ready for my next one whenever it comes my way---but I do understand three of you are swamped with graduation preparations.
ReplyDeleteI checked out "The Kite Runner" movie from the library--same author as A Thousand Splendid Suns". Hoping to watch it today. Good way to relax after "dance recital weekend"! I'm struggling with "Say You're One of Them" but will get through it eventually! Laurel
ReplyDeleteI just found a website I think you may find interesting. When you finish reading a great book and you don't know what you are going to read next, this one may come in handy. Let me know what you think. It is www.whatshouldireadnext.com I, of course, have not had this problem because I have a growing pile of books screaming at me (read me, read me) and I have to find the time to get them all read. Maybe by the end of the summer I will get through my pile.
ReplyDeleteI think we also need to get together sometime this summer to have our book reunion and see how we are coming on the service projects.
All done with Plain Truth. Only one book left--Say you're one of them. I'll fill in with Sarah's Key and whatever in the meantime. My goal is to get these done, it's a challenge, and I will conquer!! Heidi, do you have a book on Martha in your unlikely women of the bible pack?
ReplyDeleteOh my, I cannot put down Sarah's Key. It is soooooo good. I think it should be on the book club reading list.
ReplyDeleteJodi P.-- the Tenth Circle--Done. Another good one.
ReplyDeleteJodi P.--Change of Heart--Done. Even better than Tenth Circle.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteJodi P--Perfect Match. This one is about a court case, so I really enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteOK people....are you still reading. I am the non reader remember. I am keeping a list at home now. Just finished The Pact. Kind of a Romeo and Juliet type thing, but with a twist of course..good old Jodi P. It took a little longer to get involved, but then I flew through it. I need to read The Necklace or any other cast offs you guys have. I don't buy to many, but I would like to borrow if I could. thanks
ReplyDeleteElin Hilderbrand-Nantucket Nights. Good!!
ReplyDelete
